ひこ・田中の同名児童小説を原作に、相米慎二監督は、両親の離婚によって心を揺さぶられるひとりの少女の物語を繊細なタッチで描きます。

京都に暮らす明るく元気な小学6年生、レンコ。父ケンイチが家を出て、母ナズナとの二人暮らしが始まった。ナズナは新生活のための規則を作るが、レンコは変わっていこうとするナズナの気持ちがわからない。離婚届を隠したり、自宅で籠城作戦を決行したり、果てにはかつて家族で訪れた琵琶湖への小旅行を勝手に手配する…。

相米監督はこの作品について、次のように語っています（以下、英語原文はmk2プレスキットより引用）：

This is a story about Renko’s discovery of herself. She tries to pave her own path into the future. She encounters the unknown and mentally empowers herself to keep facing the unknown. Embracing yourself doesn’t mean you question why your parents gave birth to you. You have to find your own place in this world that you’ve been born into, like it or not. I very much look forward to how this film will be received today by children facing the same situation as Renko.
